Clients' Use of Brief Solution Focussed Therapy in Their Natural Environment: An Exploratory Study

Research suggests that change in therapy often occurs as a result of what the client brings to the intervention and the supports available to the client from the extra-therapeutic environment. Fifty years of outcomes research suggests that at least 40 percent of client outcomes are related to what goes on outside the therapy. This study utilises an exploratory qualitative methodology in order to explore how clients of workers in the welfare system use or experience the content of therapeutic sessions in their natural environment, using the example of a family support agency which uses Brief Solution Focussed Therapy as its primary method of intervention.

This study confirms much of what we already know about what works in counselling/psychotherapy; however, it also identifies examples of the interaction between the worker, the client and significant others in the client’s environment. It is argued that the study presents a relatively new and important area for future research in relation to the client’s experience of an intervention and its impact on and interrelationship with others in the extra-therapeutic environment. The results highlight the high degree of influence on the client of others outside the intervention, and how this relates to their progress during and following the intervention.
